results

The Manx Sailing & Cruising Club was pleased to host the Wi-Manx Regatta over the weekend in Ramsey Bay.

The weather forecast was patchy to say the least with showers and Force 5, Gusts Force 7 on the Saturday and much worse to follow on the Sunday. With this in mind our OOD, Neil Boyes, decided to set a schedule of four races on the Saturday and two on Sunday.

A smallish fleet of ten dinghies set out to race, many of the regulars either training or saving themselves for coming National or International Regattas. The conditions were much better than predicted, showers only lasting minutes and the wind mostly in the range of NW Force 3 to 4 with only the odd spicy gust.

For the first race a ‘P’ course was set with the purpose of evening out the differences between rigs, Asymetric reaching speed versus Symetrical Spinnakers and Single-Handers running speed. After a possibly over-enthusiastic/excitable first start which saw a couple of starters recalled it was Ralph Kee in his Laser (Full Rig) that made it to the front to the fleet on corrected time with Dave and Emily Batchelor following in second. Uncharacteristically, Mick Kneale in his National 18 with crew Donald and Phil, were down in 6th place… just getting their eye in!

Race 2, a windward/leeward course which should, and did, favour the Symetrical Spinnakers (the only one being the sole National 18) and Single-Handers ie Lasers, which took the first four places.

Race 3 was again a ‘P’ course and with everyone now well warmed up Andrew Dean and crew, got the win on corrected time with Mick second and Dave third.

Race 4, a triangular course was set to test the speed machines with Asymetrical rigs and this was proved by Dave Batchelor taking first and Andrew Dean third, split by the ever consistent Mick Kneale in his National 18.

The racing on Sunday with a gale warning in force was cancelled so with four races held and no discards the eventual winner was Mick Kneale. Dave and Emily Batchelor held on for second and Andrew Dean was third.

Racing was extremely close, on corrected time both Mick and Dave finished on the same points and were only separated by ‘count-back’.

Best junior was Michael Moore sailing a Laser 4.7 which must have been challenging in the conditions for a relative newcomer. “Mr Cool” prize has to go to Angus Jolly sailing his RS 600, no-one could fail to be impressed when passed by a boat going at more than twice your speed!

Many thanks to Wi-Manx for very kindly sponsoring this event, Neil Boyes for officiating as OOD, rescue boat drivers and the ladies of the club for providing a superb Regatta Tea.

Results

1st Mick Kneale

2nd Dave Batchelor

3rd Andrew Dean

4th Simon Pressley

5th Mike Pridham

6th Ralph Kee

7th Rob Cowell

8th Angus Jolly

9th Michael Moore

10th R Cave

The Manx Sailing &
