Racing 19 February 2012

Dinghy racing on West Baldwin Reservoir took place on Sunday morning in what can be best described as light and variable winds. However, it was better than last week when racing was cancelled because there was no wind what so ever, very picturesque but rubbish for sailing!

For the first race the OOD set a course, basically up and down the lake, the beat (into the wind), reaching (across the wind) and running (with the wind) all being provided by the ever changing direction of the wind.

The 16 starters soon split into two fleets, half in each, at the second to last mark it looked as if Angus Jolly and Simon Pressley (Lasers) were going to tough it out for first place, but instead they joined some of the second fleet in the doldrums. When the wind did arrive it was Mike Pridham (Laser), Joe and Eric Whitelegg (Enterprise) and Ralph Kee (Laser), who came from further back, that rounded the mark cleanly, finishing in that order on the water and on handicap.

For the second race the OOD (thankfully) shortened the course, Ralph Kee was ahead of the fleet to the first mark but was “Injebrecked” by much of the fleet by the next. Mike Pridham and Simon Pressley pulled clear ahead of the rest of the fleet to finish 20 seconds apart, but six minutes clear of the next finisher. Keith and Ted Holden finishing fourth on the water, moved up to third behind Mike Pridham first and Simon Pressley on handicap.

Top junior this week was Owen Williams who scored seventh place in race two, an excellent performance!

With Mike Pridham (2 first places this week) now heading down under to Brisbane for the Laser Masters World Championships it gives the rest of the fleet a chance to move up a few places.

As always thanks to the OOD and safety boat drivers.

<table border="0" cellspacing="0"
