Watling Streetworks Winter Series – 3 February 2019

The first round of the February dinghy racing for the Watling Streetworks series nearly got off to a very slow start this Sunday morning on West Baldwin reservoir.  With the wind in a westerly direction the Baldwin valley was completely sheltered, not a breath rippled the water and it was just above freezing. Having lost…

Watling Streetworks Winter Series – January Series

Peter Cope clinches the Scott Trophy for the January Series without having to get his boat wet, for 2 weeks running the racing was cancelled.  Last Sunday 20th the reservoir was mirror flat with no sign of wind, one week later 30 odd knots plus, as is usual the photo does not do the…

Watling Streetworks Winter Series – 13 January 2019

Report by Andrew Dean All we asked for was a change of wind conditions from last week, when very light winds gave very awkward sailing conditions.  And, goodness me, were the wishes answered, with a gale warning in force for the North Irish Sea and a gust at Ronaldsway of 37 knots recorded at 1pm,…

Watling Streetworks Winter Series – 6 January 2019

The first dinghy racing of 2019 took place on West Baldwin reservoir on Sunday morning, Round 1 of the Watling Streetworks Winter Series. The forecast was of westerly and variable breeze and was spot on, it was very variable.  Early birds reported that there was no wind but whilst the masses rigged their dinghies it…

Frostbite Regatta 2018

The annual Frostbite Regatta was hosted by Manx Sailing & Cruising Club on Boxing Day for the S.E. Quayle Cup on West Baldwin Reservoir.  Despite the name the temperature was well into double figures, with a slightly flukey breeze and at times even sunshine which made for a very pleasant race with no capsizes.  Click…

Watling Streetworks Winter Series – 9 December 2018

Unusually the wind blew down Baldwin valley for the latest round of the Watling Streetworks Winter Dinghy Series held on Sunday in bright sunny conditions.  There was potentially a fleet of thirteen for the first race, but soon after launching Jim Whitelegg in the Gull dinghy changed his mind because of the quite strong gusts…

Watling Streetworks Winter Series – 2 December 2018

The first rounds of the December dinghy racing for the Watling Streetworks Winter Series was held on Sunday morning on West Baldwin Reservoir. Weather conditions were, apart from non-stop rain or drizzle, much better than the forecast of westerly force 5 to 6, surrounding hills taking the sting out of the wind which even in…

Watling Streetworks Winter Series – 25 November 2018

Report by Andrew Dean All we asked for was a change of wind conditions from last week, when moderate easterly winds gave very awkward sailing conditions.  For a while, when we were rigging the boats for the 10 o’clock start, it looked promising, since there was clearly a northerly tilt resulting in a good solid…

Watling Streetworks Winter Series – 18 November 2018

Write-up by Jerry Colman After a flat calm on the previous Sunday, racing for the Watling Street Winter Series finally took place on West Baldwin reservoir. The weather oracles promised  this Sunday we would have both sun and breeze although the latter was to come from the East which can be problematic at Injebreck. Click…
